MONDAY
I had a brilliant weekend, with Free Fireworks at Wanstead flats, a good 45 minutes of musical magic with my friends Tania and Lee. And that was th start to a very friends orientated weekend with a house warming Saturday evening and then catching up with my girlie friends, their husbands and kids. So this morning feeling a little tired but fulfilled.

The fire that almost destroyed one of Brentwood High Street's landmark buildings was an act of arson, the Gazette can reveal. Fire investigators have finally established the blaze which gutted Sugar Hut on September 13 last year was started deliberately. The news comes in the same week that bosses at the nightspot were told by a High Court judge that their insurance claim was invalid, and they will not be getting a payout. It means the £2million cost of refurbishing the nightclub will have to be carried by Sugar Hut – which only came out of administration last year.

ANTONIO German hit the right notes on the pitch but not off it for Southend United yesterday. The 18-year-old scored from the penalty spot at Macclesfield Town on his Blues debut after signing on a month long loan from Queen's Park Rangers. But his goal came after an indifferent pre-match singing performance. “Luckily my football is 100 per cent better than my singing,” said German. “I didn't know anything about it until just before I had to get up and do it. “I tried to play it safe by doing a bit of R Kelly but it wasn't the best. “Thankfully the match went much better for me and I was really pleased to get the goal.”

ESSEX Pirates were seen off 93-60 at Worcester Wolves Saturday night. Pirates were 18-17 in front at the end of the first quarter but were 48-30 behind at half-time. That became 70-49 after the third quarter before Wolves easily held on to condemn Pirates to an 11th successive defeat. Dan Briglia top scored for Pirates with 13 points while Zach Gachette added 11.

Horse racing - Flat Jockeys championship: Paul Hanagan held off the challenge of Richard Hughes to win the champion jockeys' title on the last day of the Flat season at Doncaster.

Bon Jovi were given the Global Icon award. The rockers kept their acceptance speech short though.

Fashion guru Dame Vivienne Westwood is to design the trophies for next year's Brit Awards at London's O2 Arena.The style queen will be the first star name to revamp the trophy in a big overhaul of the annual music bash which will see the 'outstanding contribution' prize disappear.

Actor Jimi Mistry became the fifth celebrity to be voted off Strictly Come Dancing last night. The judges awarded him 32 out of a possible 40 points for the quickstep, his highest in the competition, but it wasn't enough for him to stay on the show. Mistry wiped a tear from his eye as he was given a standing ovation from both the judges and the studio audience.
And Trayc was the latest to leave the X factor house as Simon and Louis voted to keep Katie in the competition. There has been confusion about why it didn't go to deadlock, however Dermott did announce that he would take a majority vote. A harsh result especially as Simon admitted that tracy had the better voice. She was very graceful in her departure - but I am not sure that Katie will be in the competition for long as she totally ruined the sing off song.

Pamela Anderson says she'll try her powers of seduction on an unlikely audience ultra-Orthodox Jewish lawmakers in Israel. The former Baywatch star, who's an honorary director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is taking part in the local version of Strictly Come Dancing. An anti-fur bill has been put on hold in Israel over concerns it could affect production of Hassidic fur hats.

A FRAUD crackdown has unearthed nearly £500,000 in wrongly-paid benefits.
Basildon Council, working with the National Fraud Initiative, discovered the money was paid out by the authority during 2008/09 as a result of frauds, over payments and errors made in connection with benefit claims. Nationally £215million worth of taxpayers’ cash has been wrongly dished out or claimed by people who mislead councils about their details in order to claim extra money. The overpaid cash was discovered by Basildon Council when they compared information they have for claimants with other organisations, such as the Department for Work and Pensions, to look for any anomalies. The Audit Commission requires all local authorities to take part in the National Fraud Initiative as part of their responsibilities to protect the public purse.

SOUTHEND Rugby Club suffered a second successive defeat Saturday afternoon, losing 28-25 at Dings Crusaders.

Twilight has secured EIGHT nominations at the People's Choice Awards in America. Motorists face rise in cost of parking fees
Parking in Brentwood will increase by 10p but freeze the first 2 hours at William Hunter Way and the first hour at the Multi storey and Chatham Way Carparks. The rise is in response to the VAT increase announced by the Government.

A Motorist who has parked her car 'several times' in a road she does not live in has complained of receiving a series of anonymous vindictive letters ordering she moves it. Councillors are considering whether to impose a second parking restriction in the street between 2 and 3pm

Brentwood Buccaneers' Under 12's pulled off two wins and a draw in their first London league outing on Sunday. They defeated the Croydon Amphibians 4-1 and Chelmsford 5-1 before drawing 4-4 against Watford.

THREE students from Essex University are facing criminal charges after being arrested inside the Conservative Headquarters in London. The students had joined tens of thousands of people in London on Wednesday to protest against the funding cuts and tuition fee rises proposed by the Conservative and Lib Dem government. They were part of a convoy of six coaches from the Wivenhoe Park campus taking 300 students and lecturers to the event, organised by the National Union of Students (NUS). A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “A total of 50 people have been arrested in connection with yesterday's disorder in central London. “All were taken to various police stations around London. All have now been bailed to return pending further enquiries to dates in mid February 2011.”
Grandad David makes his mark on history

A GRANDAD-OF-NINE is celebrating after putting on his gown and mortar board for his university graduation ceremony – aged more than 50 years older than most of his classmates. David Williams, 72, picked up a BA Honours in history, from the University of London, in front of his proud wife Pat and fellow students. The former journalist and documentary film maker said: “I went straight into work from school and had no chance of going to university then, I wasn’t bright enough and in those days only around five per cent of people went. I have had to wait more than 50 years before getting the chance and I don’t regret it at all. It’s a great way for us oldies to show we have plenty to offer after retirement."
Following his success with his degree, in which he attained a 2.1, Mr Williams is now studying for a two-year MA in sports history and culture, at De Montfort University, in Leicester.

TWO bright sparks from a Billericay school didn’t buckle under the pressure when they took part in a stockbroking competition – they made an £82,000 profit. Although it wasn’t real money generated by Emma Watson and Emma Westgarth, both aged 13, the girls were still thrilled to come first in their school’s Stock Market Challenge. The Mayflower High School students, came out tops in the high stakes contest, which was organised as part of the school’s Maths Gifted and Talented Day.

Leigh Tennis Club is set to close next year after half a century. Club proprietor Anne Wright has decided to retire and close the private club, faced with mounting running costs. The club, in Adalia Crescent, will officially shut on March 31, 2011, and there are plans to develop the one-acre site for housing. Anne admitted it had been a tough decision but stressed she could not afford to pay for repairs out of her own pocket.
GOLF
LAN Pace (19) found the opening of the winter mats to his liking as he won Belfairs GC Stableford event on Saturday with a solid round scoring 37 points. Belfairs Ladies have been busy this month – playing two further EWGA medals over the last week. Last Saturday saw Joan Smith reverse places with Sue Meddle. Then on Thursday the ladies played another EGWA Medal with Andrea Clarke winning the overall medal and division one.
TV FOR THE WEEKEND
Tonight I am glad that I am going to the Theatre to see Our House performed by members of BOSSY as there isn't much to write home about. I reckon the best TV is post pub watching.

If you are having a relaxing afternoon and don't fancy watching England loose to Australia in the Rugby then the James Bond classic Diamonds are forever, starring Sean Connery is on ITV1 from 3.30. and on ITV2 Babe is on at 9.10
As well as Strictly Come Xfactor there are two pop music documentaries, the conclusion of Louis Walsh and Kian Egan's Next Big Thing - Wonderland - One of the group battles with a sore throat as the band prepare for their first solo gig, Louis and Kian meet record company bosses to pick the band's debut single and the girls receive a makeover before meeting the press for the first time.
Then after X Factor at 9.30 Take That: Look Back, Don't Stare. A close-up look at the making of the band's latest album Progress, providing an insight into the feelings of Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and Mark Owen on working as a five-piece again for the first time since their 1995 number one album Nobody Else. With cameras allowed into the recording studio, the five members talk about how they view Take That's initial success in the 1990s and the personal issues they had to confront in reuniting
And if that isn't enough music documentary for you there is Olly Murs Revealed at 11.45 on ITV2+1. The singer-songwriter describes his rise to fame since reaching the final of The X Factor in 2009. Cameras follow the Essex-born star's family life and his work on debut single Please Don't Let Me Go, which would become a number one hit, while contributions from Simon Cowell and fellow runners-up JLS help tell Olly Murs' story so far

And what better way to spend the afternoon than watching Back to the Future - possibly my favourite as Marty goes back to the 1950's on ITV 2 at 3.45 - Back to the Future is definately a movie that will please your inner child, however it you do have some little darlings to entertain there is Night at the Museum on E4 at 2.45 and on the +1 an hour later starring Ben Stiller, Dick Van Dyke, Robin Williams, Carla Gugino and Ricky Gervais.
After the celebrities and talent less contestants have been voted off of their respective shows you might want a touch of reality and that comes in the form of This is England is on Film4 at 9pm: Twelve-year-old Shaun lives with his mother in a shabby council flat in a bleak northern town and is lacking direction after losing his father in the Falklands War. At school, he is befriended by a skinhead gang and the leader takes the boy under his wing - a tie that draws Shaun into a world of racism and violence, but one where he begins to find a new identity. Shane Meadows' drama set in the 1980s, starring Thomas Turgoose, Stephen Graham and Jo Hartley
