Tuesday 30th March - Winter or Spring????

Lorraine Thomas, Parent Coach
Nearly three quarters of working parents in Chelmsford feel guilty about the lack of time they spend playing with their children and nearly a quarter feel they bring the stresses of their work in to the family home, according to new research released today. We’re supposedly one of the hardest working nations in Europe but the time spent at the office is starting to take a toll on our home lives as parents struggle to let go of the boardroom and immerse themselves in the world of child’s play.

Parenting coach and author, Lorraine Thomas, believes one of the main reasons parents feel stressed is because they have unrealistic expectations and it’s important they don’t try to be the perfect Mum or Dad because they don’t exist.
For working parents, it is a real struggle to find quality time to play and have fun with your children. There is always too much to do, not enough time to do it and definitely never enough Mum or Dad to go round”, says parenting coach, Lorraine Thomas. “Most working Mums and Dads say they are desperate to be ‘fun’ parents but because of the stressful demands of combining family and career – they end up as ‘frantic’ parents instead and ultimately end up feeling guilty."

“Connection is much more important than perfection. Stop thinking of time as a burden and start recognizing just how precious it is. Stop trying to pack as much as possible into every day. The housework will always be there but your children won’t be small for long. Focus on feeling good about the time you do spend with your children instead of feeling guilty about being away from them. Finally remember, it’s better to spend 15 minutes of quality time having fun than an hour with them when your mind is on other things.”

Lorraine also points out that a lot of high-tech games can be isolating:
“Playing creative games encourages you to talk and helps children to develop really important communication skills. Creative games also boost your child’s confidence and self-belief – they can be a lot better at letting their imagination run wild than us.”

  • The new "BASILDON" sign has been unveiled at the side of the A127, in the true style of Tinseltown each letter is five feet tall while the US counterpart boasts letters of about 45 feet in height. The sign is part of a £400,000 project commissioned by Basildon Council to boost the local economy. A council spokesman said the project is almost finished and the money came from the Thames Gateway programme. He said the cash will also be used to create new road signs, roadside lighting and entrance signs to the district.
  • A TASK-FORCE is being set up by Essex County Council to consider new rules on the location of hazardous installations, such as oil refineries and gas storage facilities. This comes after the issue was raised by a long-running campaigner George Whatley, of the People Against Methane group. He wants to see the introduction of a safe siting policy for facilities, such as Canvey’s Calor Gas terminal, to monitor the danger they pose to people living near by. Forum chairman and Canvey councillor Ray Howard said the panel would hear from members of the community, as well as representatives from organisations such as Calor and Petroplus, which runs the oil refinery at Coryton, in Thurrock. If the group decides a safe siting policy is necessary, it will make recommendations to the county council.
  • Basildon is also suffering from DOUBLE-parked cars which are causing road chaos and halting rubbish collections for dozens of homes. Vehicles parked along both sides of Tinkler Side, in Basildon, have been regularly forcing rubbish collectors to turn back, affecting residents in the street and nearby Thorrington Cross and Pin Mill. Eric Webb, 82, of Thorrington Cross, said the problem is causing massive disruptions, as dustmen have to return hours or even days late. It’s a real problem because people are just leaving their cars there all night, but in the morning, the truck couldn’t get through to pick up the rubbish. Mr Webb called for parking restrictions to stop drivers leaving their cars in front of the garages and the electricity substation.

  • A MUM-of-four, Tani Jones, 29, has spoken of her misery at living in a rat-infested council house for six weeks, which she says the council is doing nothing about. The single mum, who lives in Copperfield Gardens, in Brentwood, said her children are so scared of encountering the vermin, they won’t go into the kitchen alone, and the family is having trouble sleeping due to the noisy night-time pests. Ms Jones said she first reported the problem to Brentwood Council six weeks ago, and has been calling every day, only to be told the pest control team is snowed under. Things came to a head on Saturday when the family’s cooker caught fire, with Ms Jones blaming the rats who she said chewed through the wiring. The council is yet to replace the oven, leaving Ms Jones without a way of cooking for her family. Ms Jones’ problem comes just weeks after Brentwood Council controversially announced it was scrapping its subsidised pest-control service. This means residents will have to fork out hundreds of pounds to hire private extermination services, although it doesn’t apply to council tenants such as Ms Jones.

Conservative Russell Quirk, councillor for Brentwood North, has been putting pressure on council officers to prioritise Ms Jones’ case. Brentwood Council said it was looking into the problem and an officer will be visiting the house to assess the damage to the cooker soon. Louise McKinlay, leader of Brentwood Council said she could not comment on specific cases, but said: “In setting this year’s budget we had to make some very challenging decisions in respect of efficiency savings.” She added: “The pest control service was not identified as a key priority.”

SOUTHEND United blew a two-goal lead to lose 4-3 away to Bristol Rovers in a match that also saw Blues have Franck Moussa sent off. Southend had a great start and were quickly 2-0 up, But Bristol Hughes then put the Pirates in front for the first time in the 52nd minute after being set up by Kuffour. Francis atoned for giving away the penalty by teeing up Vernon for his second goal, a header on 57 minutes. But things turned sour again for Blues in the 65th minute when Moussa was sent off. Southend looked set to get a point from the match until Anthony Grant's 90th-minute own goal handed victory to the hosts. The defeat means Southend are still 21st in the table and still in the relegation zone.

BASKETBALL
ESSEX Pirates made it back to back wins as they saw off Guildford Heat 93-84 at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre on Saturday Night and then on Sunday a 73-64 triumph at London Capital.

“As a club, we move on. I have asked our reserve team manager, John Mifsud, to step in and take the remaining games.
“For those of you who are not familiar with John, he has been with us for six years, he has a good eye for a player and has built many successful winning youth sides. As well as being reserve team manager John also oversees the U18s and U16s.
“Young players like Rob Swaine, Dale Brightly, Wayne Semanshia and Harrison Chatting have all come through the ranks with John, so I have no concerns about his ability to look after and manage our side in these remaining games.

  • HUNDREDS of terminally-ill cancer patients in south Essex are not claiming benefits they are entitled to, according to a new report. Nearly 500 people who died in 2007 left behind an estimated £829,000 in disability living allowance and attendance allowance. That means each of them lost out on automatic state benefits of about £1,700. The figures come from a new report by Macmillan Cancer Support, and are based on the latest available mortality rates and unclaimed benefits data. The charity says £90.8million went unclaimed nationwide during 2007. A long and confusing process for claimants, people not knowing they are eligible, and the stigma of claiming benefits have been blamed for the low take-up. If you have any queries pop along to the drop-in centre at St Luke’s House, 22 Lampits Hill, Corringham, which opens from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. The factory, in Christopher Martin Road, was previously owned by Ford since the Fifties but in 2000 the ownership of the Basildon Factory and others transferred to Visteon UK including the Pensions even though many of the workers had paid into the Ford pension scheme for more than 30 years. But, Visteon UK went into administration a year ago, causing the factory to close and leaving the pension scheme virtually worthless. The Visteon Pension Action Group is calling on Ford to take back responsibility for former workers’ pensions.

Tuesday 23rd March - Spring lamb

GUEST
Peter Gordon, New Zealand Celeb Chef, chatted to me this morning, he is famous for his unique Fusion cooking style which focuses on the best quality and tastiest ingredients, no matter where they originate from. Peter happily mixes flavours from Asia through to the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Europe, along with his native New Zealand. The theme for spring appears to be Lamb and it can be roasted, grilled or pan fried, accompanied by creamy tomato sauces, healthy salads or traditional two veg. Whatever way you cook Lamb it is a great healthy meat and Peter Gordon's native New Zealand produces the most tender lamb at this time of year.

Tony Morrison - Essex Music Agency

The Essex Music Agency (EMA) was established in July 2008, after four years of partnership development between Essex County Council’s Arts Development and Essex Music Services, Orchestras Live, the Essex Arts Officers Group and other key county partners. Essex Music Agency aims to create a coherent, vibrant, accessible and sustainable music infrastructure within Essex. Through the creation of EMA, Essex aims to develop its reputation within both the music industry and voluntary sectors as a county that nurtures talent, encourages innovation and enables the local music community to develop.

After the success of the inaugural contest last year, won by BEFORE SILENCE FALLS, Essex Music Agency (EMA) launch its search again for the best live artist/band in the county. What makes this contest stand out is that it is a live music competition aimed at solo artists, duets or bands and EMA welcomes entries from any genre. Maybe you are the best young jazz band of Essex?

Entries are being taken between 1 January – 31 March 2010 and prizes include studio time, a festival appearance plus EMA will try and help raise your profile in the following year.

So do you have what it takes to be considered the best unsigned artist in the county? If so read on…

The rules are simple
  • The majority of the musicians must be aged between 14 – 21 years old
  • The majority of the musicians must live or be based in Essex
  • Artists must submit at least one piece of original music

The next stage

  1. Applications will go though to the first judging round in April
  2. The top 32 artists will be invited to appear at a one of 8 live heats held across the county in September
  3. Heat winners will then go through to semi finals in October
  4. Two artists from each semi final will go through to the final
  5. Final to be held in November at Colchester Arts Centre

The recent cuts in spending on Pest control announced by the council will mean that instead of paying between £15 and £30 to call out Pest Control it is likely to cost residents up to £120 for each case - Response from Council Leader Louise Mckinlay:

"In setting the budget we had to make some very challenging decisions in respect of efficiency savings. In January we consulted with residents of the borough through face to face interviews and they told us that the areas of priority were:parks and open spaces, car parks and public toilets. The pest control service was not identified as a key priority. Supporting the decision further was data held by the officers which confirmed that where we had received an enquiry about the service only 50% of the cases ended up with us actually supplying the service. We will of course continue to provide an enforcement service where pest infestation is caused by a public nuisance."

St Patricks Day

GUEST
Cllr Bentley spoke to me this morning ahead of his lunchtime talk and Q&A session with the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce . Cllr Bentley said that the first overdraft in the scheme has been agreed and they are working hard advising small companies in Essex about how to manage their finances in this troubled market.

This morning you heard me play 3rd Rock Revolution's Creative Session - Images of.. and Money - They spoke to Paul Golder about up and coming gigs and their next booked appearance is at the SX festival on Saturday 15th May. I also added an Irish Jig by Flogging Molly, to get us in the St Patrick's Day mood. The band are currently touring the US with support, for some of their dates, by Frank Turner and The Architects.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA:
Little is known of Patrick's early life, though we know he was born in Roman Britain in the fifth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a deacon in the Church, like his father before him. At the age of sixteen he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave. It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact location is unknown. According to his Confession, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to be a priest.

In 432, he again says that he was called back to Ireland, though as a bishop, to save the Irish, and indeed he was successful at this, focusing on converting royalty and aristocracy as well as the poor. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. After nearly thirty years of teaching and spreading God's word he died on 17 March, 461 AD, and was buried at Downpatrick, so tradition says. Although there were other more successful missions to Ireland from Rome, Patrick endured as the principal champion of Irish Christianity and is held in esteem in the Irish church.

ESSEX Pirates star Taner Adu sunk Plymouth Raiders with a stunning buzzer-beating shot to send the Southend Leisure and Tennis crowd crazy. But the decisive and dramatic last-gasp three-pointer, which secured an exciting 82-80 triumph for his side, was not what had been planned by Pirates coach Tim Lewis. Adu top-scored for Pirates with 22 points, but the impressive Alan Metcalfe also played a huge part in the triumph as he netted 21. The victory ended a run of four successive defeats for Pirates who have now beaten Raiders twice this season.

Power to the People

At the beginning of this week I received a phone call from a listener, highlighting to me the plight of residents living in the Long Ridings area of Hutton and their campaign to save the number 81 bus route. I felt that it was only right that I do some research myself and find out if I could shed any more light on the situation. I found the article in the Weekly news which led me to contact Chris Hossack Cllr for Hutton East who has kindly come in to the studio today to talk to me about the impending cancellation of the 81 bus route that connects Hutton to Warley. (from May 1)

Chelsea de Silva, a spokesperson for First, said the service had never made any money and was being sacrificed as part of a cost-saving strategy. She said: “We are disappointed to say we will be deregistering the 81/82 service, as we are no longer able to sustain it. “We are no longer able to run it commercially.” - I will be speaking to the MD of First Next Thursday to hear why they decided to pull this particular service in Hutton when it is evident that other areas are also under performing but they remain in service.

To sign the petition, log on to

UNREST OVER ALLOWANCES
A TORY councillor has criticised members of his own party and opposition councillors for “voting in principle” to have their allowances increased.
Brentwood North councillor Russell Quirk said he is disappointed in his fellow councillors for pocketing an extra 25 per cent in members’ allowances for the next financial year. Under the deal allowances were cut by 25 per cent last year, a move which raised £100,000, and meant council tax could be slashed by one per cent, however, members’ allowances were to be automatically restored after a year.

The matter was not discussed at last Tuesday’s budget meeting, during which councillors passed the proposed budget which included saving £100,000 by scrapping the council’s dog warden service, pest control, and reducing the amount of money given out to community groups through grants.

In a letter to the Weekly News, Mr Quirk pointed out these cuts would not have been necessary had councillors volunteered to forego 25 per cent of their allowances for another year, and as a demonstration of his feelings Mr Quirk abstained from voting on the budget. In addition Lib Dem and Labour councillors have claimed they did oppose the rise by voting against the budget. Both Lib Dem leader David Kendall, and Labour’s Mike Le-Surf said they would raise the issue in May when the results of the Independent Review Panel were discussed and members’ allowances set.

Council leader Louise McKinlay added no decision on members’ allowances had been taken. She said the figures would not be set until June, after considering recommendations from an Independent Review Panel. Until then, allowances will still be at 75 per cent. - For the full story go to the Weekly News

New out this week is Shutter Island starring Leonardo Di Caprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. It is a drama is set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island.

Sandra Bullock has already been awarded best actress for her role in The Blind Side so the movie already has a stamp of approval but why not check it out for yourself. It is an uplifting movie which tells the story of Michael Other, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman (Bullock) and her family.

If Action Thrillers are your thing, go and see Green Zone which has been created by the same team behind the Bourne Trilogy, so you can guarantee it will be full of suspense and you guessed it starring Matt Damon. The story follows a U.S. Army officer who Discovers covert and faulty intelligence as he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in an unstable region. A film that will definitely keep you on the edge of your seats.

And for some light hearted comedy taking a look at family life why not try Motherhood, not literally I mean the movie starring Uma Thermon, Minnie Driver and Anthony Edwards (ER). Eliza Welsh (Uma Thurman) is a full-time housewife who is about to celebrate her daughter's 6th birthday. Her husband (Anthony Edwards) is constantly busy and not at home. She has two children, Clara (Daisy Tahan) and Lucas (David and Matthew Schallipp). The first thing Eliza does when she wakes up is to take a snapshot of Clara sleeping. There have been some very successful women from Essex including Denise van Outen - known for her work on The Big Breakfast and then launching her West End Stage Career, there is also Romford born Millicent Martin who was sang the theme tune for 'That was the week that was', had a very successful career on the stage and then went on to star in many American sitcoms including Fraser playing Daphne's mother. ESSEX GIRL POWER!
Thanks to tasteless jokes, several females in our county struggle with low self-esteem socially and in business, according to campaigners who are ready to fight back against the stereotype. Exorcising the image of the Essex girl is no small task, but it is one that the recently formed Essex Women's Advisory Group is ready to accept with open arms and minds. The group has been set up to help Essex women and girls who have found the promiscuous, white-stiletto-wearing, cheap-wine-guzzling airhead stereotype to be detrimental to their self-confidence. To combat it, they have organised a three-year programme to improve the image of the Essex Girl, and to create a fund to help nurture, educate and protect Essex females.

The group is made up of several leading Essex figures, including Essex county council chairman Elizabeth Hart, assistant chief constable Sue Harrison, and head of Essex police criminal justice department Tricia Brennan. They have already raised £34,000, which will be shared between women's refuges in Essex, the Essex branch of the Prince's Trust and Essex Girl Guiding, and they have attracted top businesswomen and successful artists from the county to give careers advice to young Essex girls. In her role as vice chairman of the Essex Prince's Trust, Daphne Field, who is in charge of promoting the project, came across dozens of young girls who were lacking in self-esteem. The 70-year-old, of Galleywood, said: "A lot of the girls we were helping were suffering so much from this image, so we decided to do something. There are so many successful girls in Essex and we wanted to promote this."

A massive fundraiser will take place at Hylands Park in Chelmsford on July 10 and will aim to bring together businesswomen and celebrities who either were born in Essex or have moved here. The "Day for the Girls of Essex" will be a celebration of girls and women and the role they can play at all levels of society, and will publicise Essex Girls past and present as role models. ATTEMPTED MURDER

A MAJOR police investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed repeatedly and seemingly left for dead. Chris Davies was discovered by a dog walker on Tuesday, February 23, at 6.30am, next to a pig farm in Woolmonger’s Lane, Stondon Massey. The 42-year-old victim had been stabbed on his back and arms multiple times. Ambulance crews worked on him for 30 minutes to stabilise his condition before rushing him to Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford. Mr Davies underwent emergency surgery and is now in a stable condition. Police guards kept a 24-hour vigil by his hospital bedside for two days after the attack, because they feared his life could still be in danger. On Wednesday, the day after the attack, police arrested two Brentwood men on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. The 61-year-old and 39-year-old have since been released on police bail, until April 7.

Leading officer Det Supt Liam Osborne said: “This does not appear to be a random attack. I appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time who saw or heard anything to contact the police.”. The Police are treating the case as attempted murder and anyone with information should contact the major investigation team at Brentwood on 0300 3334444. - Brentwood Gazette

A MUSICAL FLOP!
A FOUR-DAY music festival for up to 120,000 revellers in Billericay looks unlikely to go ahead, after the host venue pulled out. Bosses of Barley-lands showground said they were no longer interested. Phil Burrows, commercial manager at Barleylands, said: “PH Productions made preliminary inquiries regarding hiring our venue for a festival. But, after further investigations, we have spoken to them and agreed the ifestlive will not be going ahead at Barleylands.”

Last week Phil Hutchinson, 19, who lives in Billericay, said his company, PH Productions, wanted to stage the event between July 1 and July 4 next year. He also said his company had been working with former V Festival planner Tony Wheeler on bringing the event to Billericay.
Mr Wheeler, now a production manager for events management company Nine Yards, said: “We’re not involved in that. I had a brief conversation with that young man a couple of years ago and know nothing about it.”

The Echo tried, several times, to call Mr Hutchinson, who claimed to be a millionaire, but he did not return our calls.

Meanwhile, neither Basildon Council nor Billericay Town Council have seen any plans or licensing applications for the event. Ticket companies Ticket-master and Essex Live said they were due to start selling tickets for the event tomorrow. Jon Wiffen, a spokesman for Ticketmaster, and David Eve, managing director of Essex Live, vowed to offer a full refund to customers if the event was cancelled. However, Jim Devlin, vice chairman of Billericay town council, said he would not advise people to buy tickets until licensing had been formally approved and a line-up confirmed. He said: “I think buyers have to beware.” - Evening Echo
