LOCAL NEWS HEADLINES

Evening Echo -
  • A BRAWL broke out on a football pitch after a player was sent off at the match between Newton Wesley and Stifford Clays held at Aveley FC in Mill Field, on Monday night. One person had to be treated for minor injuries by ambulance staff and the match was called off. Anyone with information has been asked to call detectives at South Ockendon or Grays on 0300 333 4444.
  • RESIDENTS OF HADLEIGH are being encouraged to volunteer at the Olympic mountain biking event and help look after the 40,000 spectators expected to descend on the site over the two-day event. As well as stewarding roles, there will be a variety of positions for volunteers. The event is scheduled for the weekend of August 11 and August 12, 2012, with the women’s event on the Saturday and the men’s on the Sunday. Seevic College, in Thundersley, has begun running courses designed to help young people get the skills they need to be Olympic volunteers. For more information about the Personal Best Programme, call 01268 756111 or e-mail info@seevic-college.ac.uk To register to volunteer, visit www.london2012.com.
  • A NEW scheme to take the hassle out of getting a blood test has been launched in Billericay. NHS South West Essex has launched a new booking service for people needing a routine blood test in the town. It comes after residents complained about lengthy waiting times for the test carried out at St Andrew’s Medical Centre in the town. However, health chiefs claim this will change from next Monday, when people will be able to call the booking line on 01268 242159 between 7am and 7pm, seven days a week. Bookable appointments at the centre, in Stock Road, will be available from 8am to 11am Monday to Friday. A walk-in service will also continue to be offered at the centre, from 11am to 1pm on weekdays.
