  • NEW nightclub aimed at a more “upmarket” clientele is set to open in Basildon town centre this weekend. The Edge, built on the site of the former Roof Garden pub, will host a grand launch evening on Friday. Owner Highbury Leisure, which also owns the snooker hall next door to the venue, in High Pavement, has been busy gutting and extending the former pub. The over-21s nightspot will have live music, DJs, karaoke, tribute acts and function hire facilities. It will also serve food all day, every day from noon until 7pm. It has a late licence and will open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. Access will be from the tenth floor of the nearby multi-storey car park, or via the newly-installed lift.
  • A MAN was thrown to the ground and kicked in the head during a violent street robbery. Detectives are now hunting two thugs who confronted the 21-year-old victim as he walked through Tavistock Drive, Billericay. One of them grabbed him and hurled him to the ground. Together, the raiders then repeatedly kicked him in the head before stealing his valuable watch and a phone, worth nearly £4,000. Police did not reveal the make of the watch as they felt it would hamper their investigation. The victim was left shaken, with nasty cuts and bruises. Both of the robbers were male. One was aged about 17, wore tracksuit bottoms and is described as “tubby”. His accomplice was 5ft 10ins to 5ft 11ins tall and wore jeans. Witnesses to the assault, which happened at around 6.15pm on Friday, can contact Det Con Crane at Basildon CID on 0300 3334444 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

ALI Carter says a mid-session interval talk with snooker legend and coach Terry Griffiths helped him to overcome a wobble against Joe Perry and in to the quarter-finals of the World Championships on Monday. But the 2008 finalist still insists he has no hope of winning the title, and that was said when he was locked in a battle with Shaun Murphy which he went on to beat. He is now in the Semi finals against Neil Robertson who took out our other Essex hopeful Steve Davis. At the end of Play on Thursday he was trailing 6-2 and will resume tomorrow morning at 10am

Australia's Neil Robertson made a blistering start to his World Championship semi-final against Ali Carter, racing into a 6-2 lead. Robertson, 28, took a scrappy opener before winning the next four frames, with breaks of 124, 91 and 76.

Englishman Carter, the 2008 runner-up, looked shell-shocked before hitting back with two of the last three frames, finishing with a break of 69.

SILLY SPORTS STORY - SKY NEWS

The player argued a potential career as a tennis coach could be ruined Briton Robert Dee, now based in La Manga, took action against the Daily Telegraph over an article written in April 2008. The 23-year-old argued that the article was "offensive" and could blight his potential future career as a tennis coach. The newspaper argued that its article was not defamatory when read together with another piece in the same edition. The judge in the High Court agreed with the newspaper.

"The claimant is a professional player who did indeed lose 54 consecutive matches in tournaments on the international professional circuit during which he did not win one set. His losses were in tournaments which are under the jurisdiction of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) and the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals); they are world ranking tournaments and attract world ranking points. His record of consecutive losses was the world record equalling worst-ever run of consecutive losses on the international professional circuit."

In reality, she concluded, Mr Dee could not be justified in his complaint and the facts justified the comment. The story had been widely covered, the judge said, adding that a number of organisations had apologised and settled with Mr Dee over coverage, including the BBC and Reuters.

  • EON workers being made redundant in June have accused the company of insensitivity after being told to train the staff taking their jobs. Call centre workers based in Rayleigh are already upset at losing their jobs, but now are angry they will be required to train staff from other centres on doing their jobs. The work is being moved to other locations when the centre in London Road closes on June 25. One unhappy worker, who did not want to be named, said: “At least 20 people are expected to train Eon call centre operators in certain procedures. It’s awful and totally insensitive." Scott Somerville, Eon spokesman, said: “To make sure all processes are handled correctly and we continue to deliver the high levels of customer service expected of us, we’re working across all our relevant teams to make sure the move to create centres of excellence delivers results for customers straight away. “We understand what a difficult time this is for our colleagues at Rayleigh. We will continue to do everything we can to help.”

  • It isn’t time to be thinking about pantomime is it? Oh yes it is. Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre is already on the lookout for young talent to take part in this year’s Christmas offering, Aladdin. In June, the auditions to find the juvenile cast will take place at the theatre and children and young people who want to take part are encouraged to apply now. Pantomime producers One From the Heart are looking for outstandingly talented dancers, both girls and boys, to join the professional cast on stage this December. Entrants should be aged between 11 and 19 and have extremely strong dance ability and exceptional stage presence. Singing and drama experience is useful, but not essential. To audition, request an information pack by calling the box office on 01245 606505 or by logging on to www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres and downloading the pack from the website. Information packs can also be collected from the theatre’s Box Office on Fairfield Road. Auditions will be held in the Civic Theatre on Saturday, June 12, from 10am to 1.30pm. Closing dates for receipt of application forms is 28 May.

  • MOTORCYCLE instructors in south Essex have said the new driving test could lead to bikers taking to the roads without a full licence. The new test came in to force last year, but has just been criticised in a damning report by the Parliamentary Transport Select Committee, which said learners have to travel too far for their tests. The examination requires riders to complete a competency exam on a specialist off-road track. The Southend Driving Test Centre, which held car and motorbike tests, was forced to close because it did not have a track. Learners now have to go to a larger centre in Basildon. Across the country, the number of test centres was cut from 200 to 50, because of a lack of off-road facilities, leading to a huge drop in the number of tests available and raising safety concerns. Would-be bikers, as well as learner drivers, now take both the on-road and off-road parts of their test at the new Basildon test centre, in Paycocke Road, following the closure of the Southend test centre, in Prittlewell Chase.
  • LORRY drivers on Essex’s roads are still putting themselves, and other motorists, at risk. Operation Mermaid safety checks were again carried out at the Boreham Services, in Chelmsford, on the A12. Out of 28 vehicles stopped and checked, six were stopped from going any further because of mechanical faults. Nine prohibition orders were issued against the six vehicles. Nine vehicles were found to have 14 mechanical faults. PC Dave Gorbutt, commercial transport investigator for Essex Police, said the figures for drivers breaking the law with vehicle faults and driving beyond their legal hours were staying about the same. Twice a week at three checkpoints in the county, of which Boreham is one, Operation Mermaid is carried out. PC Gorbutt said the most serious fault they found was on a foreign 41-tonne articulated lorry with its trailer brakes not working. He added: “When you realise the trailer could be carrying up to 30 tonnes, you can see how dangerous that is.” A total of 113 driving hours infringements were detected and three other driving and licence offences were dealt with. A total of £1,070 was taken in fixed penalty charges and deposits.

  • IT is the battle of the unofficial World Cup songs and Chelmsford’s entry is hoping to get your vote. Sally and Phil Mathie have written Show the World as their contribution to the World Cup in South Africa, which starts in June. The couple, of Beeleigh Link, felt past World Cup songs were always produced by big names and wanted to strike a blow for the ordinary football fan. Sally, 31, explained she wrote most of the words to the tune of Disney’s Bare Necessities from the Jungle Book, along with husband Phil. Friend Brian Johnson then did the recording and videoing one afternoon in the back garden, with a group of 20 friends and neighbours. Sally said it had received 600 views since going on YouTube and 500 people had visited the fan page on Facebook. She added: “We are still waiting to hear from Warner’s about what permissions we need to use the music. “But people have been really complimentary about it. It just started as a bit of fun.“Whatever happens, it has been great fun and something we will always remember.” Sally said they were now hoping someone would take it on board. She said: “If you don’t try, you don’t know what will happen.” The video can be found on YouTube by typing World Cup song Chelmsford. It has now been entered into the World Cup song 2010 competition and every time it is viewed, it will get a vote.

He will be offering lessons at weekends and throughout the school holidays until the end of October, on the hills of Gloucester Park, in Basildon. • GROUP of budding film-makers have transformed a play written by a severely disabled man into a film. The sixth-formers from Brentwood School were so inspired by Ben Adams’ play, My Beirut, which he wrote with the help of his carers, they decided to turn it into a film and raise money for charity to boot. Mr Adams, who lives in Stock, suffers from a rare genetic disease called spinocerebellar degeneration, which means he is unable to walk, talk, move or communicate in any way apart from eye movements and limited hand movements. His carers talk to him by passing his hand over a keyboard and waiting for him to signal which letter he means by squeezing his thumb. Through this method he composed My Beirut, which is about his personal suffering as well as wider issues such as freedom, human rights and abuse. Ben’s story came to the attention of Brentwood student Ryan Barrell through his sister, who used to be one of Ben’s carers. Ryan, who is very involved with community service at school, was so struck with My Beirut, he teamed up with another volunteer, Samuel Haskell, and set about turning the play into a screenplay. Auditions were held, footage shot and the editing got underway. Now the film is ready to be seen and the premiere will be held on Saturday, April 24, at the school. It costs £10 for adults, £5 for adults, and all money raised will go to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, in London.

A second half own goal saw Brentwood beaten in a disappointing end-of-season game at Oakfield on Saturday. Brentwood failed to create enough chances to deserve anything out of the game and the hosts were worth the win that extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

"The seven staff members have been informed and we are working with them to help find alternative employment, as there are a number of other Currys and PC World stores nearby." Brentwood has always had a proud tradition of independent restaurants and shops. Monday 12th April - What a weekend!!

I won the sweepstake at work for the second year running - but I don't think they will let me play next year!

GUEST : DCFO Gordon HUNTER

DCFO Gordon Hunter is organising the charity event to raise funds for Help for Heroes and our own Firefighters Charity and wants all stations to support the event, either on St George’s Day itself – April 23 – or the Saturday that follows.

He’ll be out with the rest of SMB with their own buckets and sponges at Kelvedon Park on April 23, so if your car needs a special shine, drive over for a wash. So, if you plan to take part, please register your interest with chloe.rowling@essex-fire.gov.uk.

“There’s always a feeling of patriotism around St George's Day, so I wanted to do something to tap into that and bring to everyone’s attention the tremendous work being done by our men and women overseas serving with the armed forces. As a service we’ve always had strong links with the armed forces and this is just an enjoyable way of demonstrating our support,” said DCFO Hunter. “We’re hoping stations will be able to provide their own buckets, sponges and leathers, but if you’re having difficulty, contact Media for support.”

  • ESSEX motorists are facing testing times as the price of fuel hit an all time high with average petrol prices hitting 120p a litre, eclipsing the previous peak of 119.7 in July 2008. The RAC says it comes just days after the 1p a litre fuel duty rise on April 1 and with oil prices increasing, the future looks bleak for motorists. The increase has been put down to the weak pound, the increase in the wholesale price of fuel and the tax rises since December 2008 adding around 10p to the cost of a litre of fuel. As well as motorists battling the rise, emergency services are also feeling the effects of the increase as they try to keep their vehicles on the road. The East of England Ambulance Service, which covers Essex, said the price of fuel had been taken into consideration in its annual budget, but admitted it would have an impact on future budgets if petrol prices continued to rise. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said it had fuel reserves to call on if needed. Essex Police said they would not be affected by the increase, but warned motorists and petrol stations to be vigilant over the theft of fuel.

Thursday 8th April Feature Films and Future Stars!

GUEST: Brad Watson Writer and Director - Beacon 77

Brad began his career in film and TV as a camera assistant, then as an assistant editor in the cutting rooms of Pinewood, Shepperton and London. In 2004 Brad co-founded Revolt Films and directed the horror/comedy feature film, ASYLUM NIGHT, which won the Tromafling award for ‘Best UK Feature’ at the Edinburgh Festival.

Between 2004 and 2007, Brad directed and produced several award winning short films and music videos, plus fulfilling the roll of digital FX supervisor and music composer on most. Brad is also co writer and co director of DIFFERENT SHADES OF GRAHAM, a feature film in development that won its production budget through The Big Pitch with Moxie Makers and Ipso Facto Films.

Brad’s practical knowledge of every aspect of film production and inventive ability to mix old school tricks with cutting edge technology enabled him to achieve his ambitious vision of BEACON77.

The FILM:
Two young women arrive at a curious penthouse apartment, led by one’s crush on her tutor. However, her love interest doesn’t live alone. He’s part of a trio of computer hackers about to embark on the ultimate job on the world’s most mysterious mainframe. Whilst doing so, they unlock more than they bargain for with supernatural and ultimately fatal results.

Can this seemingly insignificant chain of events, which have thrown this group together, be construed as fate? Can the beacon provide a signal of hope or is it a web of manipulation, paranoia and ultimately... murder?

At present, Beacon77 are confirmed a cinema release in the UK for August. The film has so far gained distribution in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium, Russia and some Satellite countries. It was shot at 3 Mills studio in London but there was some location shooting in Southend and Billericay. The movie was edited at Brad's studio in Barleylands Farm in Billericay and over 220 visual FX shots were completed there too.

A team of six experienced officers started work on the review today, going into the five divisions which cover the county, and working with their commanders. Detectives would not be asked to choose to specialise in dealing with a particular type of crime, he said, nor would detectives be centralised into a single, county-wide unit. • SIX-YEAR-OLD boy was found with a penknife at school. Nicola Shadbolt, headteacher at Aveley primary school, tried to quell fears by saying he kept the knife in his pocket all day and did not threaten anyone with it. She said: “It was a really minor incident. The rumour that it was a flick knife is untrue. It was a penknife. I followed it up with his mum and she said he is allowed it at home. I said it should definitely not come into school again. I have spoken to the mother again and reminded her.” A concerned parent, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “My child is in the same class as the boy and I was so surprised. My child came home and replicated the action of a flick knife. Where would a child learn that? I have spoken to the other mums and we are all disgusted. We expected him to be suspended or an emergency meeting called for the parents, but it was not addressed at all.” Helen Cook, a spokeswoman for Essex Police, said there was little officers could do about the incident. She added: “A child of six is under the age of criminal responsibility.”

  • THE boss of Essex’s fire brigade has hit out at the Government’s botched plan to axe the county’s emergency control room. Chief fire officer David Johnson, of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, said he had serious concerns over the project, which would see Essex emergency calls dealt with in Cambridgeshire. He said taxpayers would be paying more for the new regional centre instead of making savings as planned. The Essex control room in Hutton, Brentwood,- would be replaced by the Cambridgeshire centre , which will also take calls from five other services. But the multimillion-pound scheme, which has already hit delays, has attracted fierce opposition from MPs and the Fire Brigades Union, who claim it would put lives at risk as the local knowledge of call handlers would be lost.

Weekly News:

  • FORMER Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell breezed into Brentwood to open a new mental health facility. The broadcaster unveiled a plaque to open a new resource centre for the South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. Health leaders and VIPs gathered for the opening of the facility, based at the High Wood Hospital site in the town. Mr Campbell, a mental health champion and supporter of the national mental health campaign Time To Change, also met staff from the centre, which will house mental health outpatient, day care and therapy services for adults.
  • POLICE have launched a campaign to crackdown on youngsters causing “misery and disorder” for residents by targeting five crime hotspots across Brentwood. After complaints from residents about gangs of youths hanging around and causing trouble, officers, working with Brentwood Council, have brought in five dispersal zones. These zones give police the power to force groups of two or more people to leave. If they refuse, or return within 24 hours, they face arrest and potentially three months in prison. The orders also give police the power to take children under the age of 16 home, if they are out past 9pm. The areas cover central Brentwood, the Three Arch Bridge area, a section of Rayleigh Road, Hutton, Pilgrims Hatch and Doddinghurst. The blitz will last until the end of September.

Gazette:

  • FOUR men have been arrested and charged with burglary following a break-in at Pilgrim's Hatch post office stores. Police were alerted after thieves broke into the store in Ongar Road in the early hours of Thursday morning and stole money and cigarettes, causing more than £1,000 of damage. A short time later police arrested a group of men in a car in the Romford area and four Londoners were charged with burglary. Christopher Tyler, aged 21 from Prospect Hill, Walthamstow, and Darren Parkins (aka Saunders), aged 28 from Verderers Road, Chigwell, appeared before Southend Magistrates on April 3. Two other men, an 18-year-old from Ilford and a 23-year-old from Chadwell Heath, have been charged and bailed to attend Basildon Magistrates Court on April 22. A fifth man, a 21-year-old from Romford, was later arrested and bailed until May 14 pending for further enquiries.

  • A planned four-day national rail strike has been called off after it was challenged in the High Court. Network Rail was granted an injunction after it convinced judges there were discrepancies in the train union's ballot for industrial action. This means the strike, which is in protest over job cuts and working hours, due to start next Tuesday, will not go ahead. Engineering work continues across the weekend with no service between Romford and Liverpool St.

  • THE fairytale of the three princesses who came to Essex is over. In the last installment of the story which has been played out on BBC Three, viewers saw how the two men chosen by two of the princesses to return to their countries, got on. Princess Xenia of Saxony in Germany, who used the name Gaby, chose Chelmsford hairdresser Elliot Rowley to return with her, while Princess Sheillah from Buganda in Uganda, who went under the name Cindrellah, took home Paul, the man she met in Asda, in Basildon. However Princess Aaliya from India was not so lucky and she invited home a female bartender Emma, from Brentwood, she had made friends with while here. For Elliot and Xenia it was just good friends as they parted and he returned to Chelmsford. Elliot says he is in regular contact with Xenia who has visited him and they are going on holiday later this year, visiting Aaliya in India.

Evening Echo:
  • THE health trust which serves Basildon and Thurrock has been praised for its customer care, clean clinics and standard of service. Health regulator the Care Quality Commission has given NHS South West Essex Primary Care Trust the all-clear when it comes to the standards of health services it provides. The commission – which demanded urgent action at Basildon Hospital’s accident and emergency unit in October after condemning low standards of hygiene – is reviewing health services at every PCT in the country. This coincides with the introduction of its new system of stricter standards of care.
  • SEAL-watching trips from Southend Pier could be available from the summer if a former City worker achieves his dream. Graham Manning, 51, wants to set up the trips because he has been made redundant three times since 2008. Now the dad-of-two is hoping to launch his own business running trips to watching seal colonies on the mudflats off Chalkwell. Keen sailor Mr Manning came up with the idea of the trips after a conversation with his brother Nigel, who heard visitors to the pier talking about the estuary’s seal colonies through his work as a volunteer at the RNLI shop. Using some of his redundancy money, Mr Manning began to draw up a business plan and approached Southend Council about what he would need to set up the business. Provided he gains a boatmaster’s licence from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and passes courses in fire and sea safety, Mr Manning hopes to be running trips by June.

  • AFTER years of losing out to the green glamour of St Patrick's Day, the campaign to celebrate St George is finally gaining ground. This year, St George's Day celebrations are being held across the district, with Wickford taking a lead in recognising our patron saint. As well as running the community day on April 24, the day after St George's Day, Douglas is also running an event at his own Bar Plazma, in the High Street, on Thursday 22. More than 30 groups across Billericay, Wickford and the rest of the district are holding a St George's Day party with the help of the DIY Party in a Box scheme being run by Basildon District Council.Voluntary, religious and community groups can still request one of the boxes to host their own celebration. Groups can still apply for a box by contacting the council on 01268 294561.
  • FAMILIES desperate to go green were pointed in the right direction as Billericay launched an environmental campaign. Billericay is the first town in Essex to take on the challenge of going green after it was revealed that the average carbon footprint for homes in the town is 20 per cent larger than elsewhere in the UK. The Greening campaign was officially launched at the Emmanuel Church, in Laindon Road, on March 23 with the help of Piper Terrett – the Energy Saving Trust's green voice of the UK.The audience at the meeting voted for their favourites from a list of 15 energy saving ideas and set targets for cutting emissions. They all agreed to turn off lights when leaving a room, walk if journeys are less than a mile and turn off appliances usually left on standby. Each of these small changes could reduce our carbon dioxide output by 20kg a year, as well as saving homeowners cash.Cllr David Knight, who is chairing the Greening Campaign in Billericay, said: "A house would save £800 a year if all the suggestions on the list were put in place."

  • A McFLURRY of film crews crowded round McDonald’s, at Basildon’s Festival Leisure Park for a new TV commercial. Two huge studio lights and vintage American cars could be seen in the car park, most of which was closed for filming. It was the first of three McDonald’s restaurants to be chosen to feature in a forthcoming advertising campaign. The others are in London. It was an extra special day for Sel Isikgun, 26, who runs the restaurant as assistant franchisee with her parents, as she used to produce commercials. Sel, from Billericay, took charge of both the kitchen and the film set for the occasion and she said the experience of being on a film set again was fantastic. The commercial is expected to air on TV in the summer.
  • THE fight to ensure 640 workers facing redundancy at Eon in Rayleigh are treated fairly has been taken on by a Euro MP. Richard Howitt, Labour MEP for the East of England, will meet with staff, managers and union leaders when he visits the company in London Road tomorrow to investigate allegations the company has broken European law by not consulting workers over the closure. There are also concerns among staff and the union the company is penny-pinching on redundancy payments. Mr Howitt will hear directly from union leaders about alternative plans that could save more than 300 jobs.
  • A DRIVER went berserk and pushed a cyclist up against a hedge following a minor crash. The cyclist, a 28-year-old Billericay woman, was in St Andrew’s Place, Shenfield, when her bike and a dark-coloured estate car crashed during the morning rush hour on Friday 19th March . The woman was thrown to the ground in the crash, but instead of checking if she was OK the driver stood over her and started hurling abuse at the woman before driving off. Shocked passers-by helped the woman up and she carried on her journey, but a few minutes later the same man stepped out in front of her bike in Priest’s Lane and forced her to stop. He grabbed the bike and threw it to the ground while continuing his bad-mouthed abuse and forced her up against a hedge. The man was described as around 6ft tall, in his fifties, with a slim build, short grey hair and a small scar on the left side of his face. He was wearing a dark waist-length anorak, plain dark T-shirt and blue jeans at the time. Police officers have asked for any witnesses to come forward and believe a number of motorists may have seen the abuse take place as they made their way to work or schools.
Any witnesses can call PC Corlett, at Brentwood police, on 0300 3334444.
