RAIL bosses have done a U-turn and said they are willing to negotiate with the owners of a snack
bar, Bread and Buffers, which was threatened with closure when in July,£1.87million plans to revamp the station were announced. Since then, the campaigning couple have collected 3,000 signatures in protest at the move and on Thursday, along with Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron and representatives from Essex Federation of Small Businesses, they handed in their petition to the Prime Minister at Downing Street. National Express has said they can have a spot in the refurbished station and offered them a new lease at their existing rent.

FIRE chiefs spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on new vehicles only to find they were faulty. Firefighters angrily criticised the purchase by fire chiefs, claiming such “wasted” funds came at a time when bosses were planning to cut jobs and close stations. It's a Double news item for Take That this morning:
Take That apparently considered ditching their name when Robbie returned to the group. Williams' told Q magazine, they toyed with the idea of calling themselves 'The English.' He says the initial plan was for a one-off track under the assumed name - and although the idea was ditched he says it allowed the band to be more creative. They've adopted an electro pop-style for their comeback album Progress, which is out next month.

AND...

Take That are showing their musical evolution - by aping the famous "ascent of man" image.
Their version of the famous picture - which show man's development from primate over the course of several million years - is on the cover of the group's new album Progress. Top photographer Nadav Kander created the shot to mark a change in style, with less emphasis on ballads and more experimentation with electro pop.

Bing Crosby will go head to head with the X Factor in the battle for this year's Christmas number one. The crooner is teaming up with opera star Bryn Terfel via some computer trickery to re-release the 1942 hit White Christmas. If the duet manages to pip the X Factor winner to top spot, it would be Crosby's first EVER number one single in the UK.

ITV's agreed a new three-year deal to keep hit shows The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent.
The arrangement extends the channel's nine-year relationship with music supremo Simon Cowell until 2013. The broadcaster says it's also secured exclusive UK broadcast rights to the
American version of The X Factor and America's Got Talent for ITV2.

X Factor reject Storm Lee says he was booted off the show because his performance was too "polished". The 37 year old, who dyed his hair bright pink for the show, got the lowest number of votes from the public last night. He says viewers prefer to watch contestants who are "more amateur" than him.

In the Radio Times Music legend Sir Elton John has slammed today's songwriters as "pretty awful" and reckons TV is boring. The 63-year-old says he's not a fan of TV talent shows and confirmed he turned down the opportunity to be a judge on American Idol. He says he does admire contemporary stars such as Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga and believes it's important they write their own songs.

It looks like Ronan Keating and his wife may be giving things another go, after they were photographed together in Australia. The Boyzone singer and partner Yvonne announced they were divorcing in August - after rumours of his infidelity. But now they've been pictured heading to Bondi Beach and a tattoo parlour.

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has denied reports that the 2012 festival has been cancelled because the Olympics will create of a shortage of portaloos. However he did admit that the London games did play a part in his decision to make it one of Glastonbury's regular rest years. Tickets for next year's festival have already sold out.

POLICE support officers sparked an animal rescue attempt after spotting a deadly cobra wrapped round the handlebars of one of their bikes. But the reptile which caused the alert turned out to be a rubber toy. Before the error was spotted, the two officers had got as far as clearing the area, near Thorpe Bay Yacht Club in Eastern Esplanade, and even called for back up while the police control room contacted poisonous snake expert Iain Newby. He said: “More and more people are keeping things like this as pets, and it’s not impossible for them to get loose. So they did exactly the right thing while they were not sure what they were dealing with, as even rubber snakes are getting more and more accurate.” One of the PCSOs, Tristan Adams, said: “We will always err on the side of caution when dealing with incidents such as this, which could potentially pose a significant threat to members of the public. It was only a very realistic replica snake, but I’d rather we over-reacted to a false alarm than ignored a real emergency.”

ITV chiefs have been berated by the people of Essex for portraying our county as "a world where nail bars, night clubs and tanning salons are a way of life". A voiceover at the start of the show from Essex celebrity Denise Van Outen explains that these are not actors – everything in the show is real. An ITV spokesman responded to the county's criticisms by saying: "The Only Way is Essex represents a slice of Essex life. It's clearly not a representation of the whole of the county." But Daphne Field, head of the Essex Women's Advisory Group which aims to combat the negative stereotype, said: "The problem is that there are a few of these types of people in every town in the country, from Maidstone and Basingstoke to Newcastle and Liverpool. The stereotype is getting really boring. We are an affluent county with lots of successful men and women. And whoever came up with this show has not presented a fair cross-section of people in Essex."
Jeremy Lucas, Essex County Council cabinet member for heritage, culture and the arts, said he is proud to be an Essex man. "The council has worked really hard to promote a greater understanding of Essex and what it is really all about," he said. "It's disappointing people are still trying to suggest there is only one aspect to the county."

Canvey Island saw off Deal and Betteshanger 16-3 in the first round of the London and South Essex Intermediate Cup. But Canvey were disappointed with their performance against a side who seemed intent on annoying the referee. Deal attempted to spoil the game by constantly killing the ball or playing from offside to the extent that the ref was handing out yellow cards like playing cards. Subsequently, Deal had just 12 players with two in the sin bin and one red carded. But handling errors, missed passes and wrong options from Canvey kept Deal in the game. - Evening Echo

NETBALL
SEEVIC College’s netball squad have continued their fine start to the Superleague season with a 39-35 win at Truro. Thundersley based Seevic are the only college in Essex to be invited to the Netball Superleague, where they face the toughest of opponents and Truro Sports Academy College is certainly one of them. But the Seevic team boarded flight BE805 to Newquay and set off with a win in mind. The girls’ court performance was of pure quality as the team dominated the match. Fatigue was kicking in during the last quarter and injury lead to the two most experienced players, Mikki Austin and Natalie Smith, having to come off, but the girls held on for a 39-35 win. Goal attack Brook Dyer scored 23 goals, while Georgia Gilling added 16. Player of the match was Brook Dyer. - Evening Echo

Director Mike Leigh's presented his latest offering at London Film Festival. 'Another Year' is set in London and is about a happily married couple and their lonely friends and relatives. It's another tear-jerker like his films Vera Drake, and the Bafta-winning Secrets and Lies. The director was joined on the red carpet by actors Jim Broadbent and Imelda Staunton who star in the film that's out next month.

Actor Jean-Claude Van Damme's reportedly suffered a minor heart attack on the set of his new movie.
It's understood he was taken to hospital just a day after his 50th birthday.
Relatives say he's been given the all-clear by doctors and is heading home to

FISHING
Evening Echo, By James Colasanti
ROLLO Rollings began his love affair with fishing as a five-year-old when his dad showed him how to cast a rod off of Southend pier. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then during a life which has seen him carve out a successful career as a city trader, become a park warden, endure two acrimonious divorces, and survive a near death experience following a drugs overdose.
But for all of those colourful antics, he has never stopped doing the one thing which truly makes him happy – catching fish. Despite the 67-year-old’s ongoing battle with lung cancer, he can be seen most days riding his bicycle along Southend seafront, and is an instantly recognisable figure to local fishermen. Rollo will be casting his rod again this weekend and trying to win the £3,000 pot at the British All-Round Open in Deal, Kent.

A DRIVING instructor fears signposts that have been sawn in half are an accident waiting to happem. Tape has been put on to cover the cut off point of the signs, but their sharp ends have been left sticking out. Mr Musaji first noticed one outside his house in London Road where the speed limit was being changed from 40 to 30mph. Mr Musaji said: “I am worried because some of the cut signs are just over half a metre high, and if there is an accident involving a motorist or cyclist it could be fatal. A lot of cars are made out of more lightweight metals nowadays, and at the moment I feel as if it is an accident just waiting to happen.”

A county council spokesman said: “The council has been made aware of the unwanted posts still in place at a small number of sites in the Basildon area. “Highways officers are now investigating the situation and will work to get these removed.”

SOUTHEND United could be missing both their first choice strikers for tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash at Barnet. For Barry Corr (hip) and Blair Sturrock (hamstring) face late checks on their fitness. And they could well both miss out on the second round clash at Underhill. The on loan Nathaniel Jarvis, Harry Crawford and Matt Paterson are all pushing to replace the forwards if they fail to recover in time to take on Bees. But Sturrock will definitely be forced in to at least one change as midfielder Michael Timlin is cup tied having played in the first round for Swindon Town at Southampton. Louie Soares or Adam Bouzid are in line to replace him but the Blues boss will not be making too many other alterations to his team as he is keen to reach the latter stages of the competition.

Campaining residents were dealt a crushing blow when Basildon councillors approved plans to build homes on a cherished playing field. Planning bosses debated the controversial proposals to allow 25 homes on a playing field off Felmores, Pitsea, at a packed Basildon Council development control meeting last night. After two hours of debate, during which opposition and even Tory councillors spoke out against the scheme, five members voted to pass the application, while two opposed it. The move is a kick in the teeth for more than 1,000 residents who signed a petition and those who joined an online Facebook group opposing the plans.
Last night’s decision does not bode well for campaigners fighting to save two other pieces of land also earmarked for development. These are playing fields in Kent View Road, Vange, and a community centre off Pound Lane, Laindon, which will soon come before planning bosses.
The land is under threat because the Tory administration says it needs to raise cash for the £38million Sporting Village, being built in Gloucester Park.

Councillors who unsuccessfully voted down plans to build homes in the middle of Billericay may get another chance to oppose them – if local people raise objections. In February, developer R and G Holmes won permission on appeal to build eight houses and a flat on land behind Barclays Bank’s High Street Branch. Basildon Council and Billericay Town Council both opposed the application, arguing the site was too small and the access road too narrow for emergency vehicles to use. However, having won the appeal, the developer has been forced to put in a revised application after learning the approved plans would interfere with a sewer. The application could be decided by planning officers, without going before a planning meeting, because it is only slightly different to the original proposal.

THERE has not been too much to get excited about for supporters of the Essex Pirates so far this season. Their side have started the campaign with four successive defeats and were seen off in convincing fashion by both MK Lions and Cheshire Jets last weekend. But, amid those disappointing results, has been the emergence of summer signing Myles Hesson. He has top scored in three of Pirates’ four matches so far and bagged 27 points in his side’s last home game against the Lions. The youngster is now aiming for more of the same on Sunday against the Worcester Wolves at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre and he already feels settled in his new surroundings. Hesson is one of the players being given an opportunity and this is his first involvement in the BBL. But, having previously played for Great Britain at under 20 level, Hesson is used to playing against top teams. The game tips off at 5pm.
