FIREFIGHTERS might be more used to getting hot under the collar while at work but thanks to the launch of a new rescue boat they can now cool their heels too. Crews at Leigh fire station, in Mountdale Gardens, have been trained in both a range of water rescue techniques as well as how to handle powerboats. The four-metre-long craft, which is the first of its kind in the county, will be used for freshwater and coastal flooding and also inland water rescues. Station Officer Simon Dedman, Leigh Station Commander, said: “Everyone at the station has really thrown themselves into this project and it is thanks to their enthusiasm that this has come to fruition so quickly. “We are now all looking forward to putting our skills and equipment to good use throughout the county.” - By Katy Islip, FOR FULL STORY AND PICTURES SEE TUESDAY'S ECHO.

THE chairman of Essex Police Authority has called for a unique patrol on one of the country’s worst roads to be saved. Fears have been raised that the £1.25million A12 patrol could fall victim to Government cuts in October. But Robert Chambers, chairman of the authority, said he would like to see Essex County Council continue to fund the scheme, which was set up a year ago with the police – its partner in the A12 alliance. The A12 patrol, set up a year ago, was the first locally-funded patrol dedicated to reducing congestion on a major road. It uses specially-trained police, capable of using stingers and carrying out high-speed pursuits, as well as simply keeping traffic flowing, and was set up on the recommendation of the council’s A12 inquiry. The notoriously congested route was labelled one of the worst trunk roads in the country. Essex county councillor for highways and transportation, Norman Hume, who is also chairman of the A12 alliance, said the council was looking at the impact of the patrols.

My mate Pete’s weekend warm up:
Tennis
- US Open finale this weekend. Today is the last of the men‘s Quarter-Finals, with the men‘s and women‘s finals this weekend. Andy Murray is already out, but Laura Robson is going well in the juniors.
F1 - Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with qualifying at 1pm on Saturday and the race at the same time on Sunday.
Hockey - Women’s World Cup in Rosario, Argentina - England have made it through to the semi-finals where they will take on a very strong Dutch side tonight, with the final on Saturday.
Football - pick of the fixtures this weekend; on Saturday at 12.45 Everton vs. Man U (Rooney returning to Everton where he’ll probably get quite a hostile reception, especially after all of his, ahem, misdemeanours!) Also Saturday at 15.00 West Ham vs. Chelsea, and Monday night, Stoke vs. Aston Villa for Gerard Houllier’s managerial debut for Villa.
Cricket - unfortunately Essex were relegated yesterday, they’re 2 days into their game against last year’s champions Durham and going well, but results elsewhere mean they are relegated after Hampshire got enough bonus points to secure 7th spot.
Rugby union - England women just lost their World Cup final last weekend, but the Aviva Premiership continues this weekend, and in Rugby League the play-offs continue, including the Hull derby on Sunday.
Basketball - the World Championships are ongoing in Turkey, we’re down to the last 8 nations now, unfortunately England aren’t one of them!
Finally, report to come next week on my Handball efforts, but training takes place at 7.30pm on Monday nights at the Brentwood Centre, your first training session is free, and check out www.brentwoodhandball.co.uk for all the details.

The father-of-three and grandfather-of-four started his long career as a footballer playing for teams including Dundee United, Portsmouth and Southend United.
