Oh what a Beautiful Morning!

Another busy weekend had by yours truly!! A lovely start to the week but I am not too sure how long the sunshine will last!! At the moment it looks like a quiet week on the guest front, however if last week was anything to go by I could be inundated by the end of the week. Tomorrow at 9.45 Peter Gordon will be teasing your taste buds by talking about the taste of Spring - sharing his cooking tips and influences from his homeland New Zealand

LOCAL HEADLINES

In the Evening Echo -
  • A PILOT managed to walk away from the wreckage of the Cessna after it skidded along a field off Buckhatch Lane, near to Hyde Hall, at about 12.30pm today.
  • A GROUP of 11, 14 - 16 year olds completed the first-ever firefighters course which lasted 17 weeks. They got to celebrate their achievements with a drill and passing out ceremony at Basildon Fire Station with their friends and family
  • A PIONEERING project to get young offenders in Southend back on track could be rolled out in other parts of Essex because of its success. The Triage scheme allows young offenders the option of taking part in a comprehensive programme to address their behaviour, rather than being given a caution and criminal record. Officers from the youth offending service work with their families to improve parenting skills, and ensure the young person goes to school and keeps out of trouble. A meeting of Essex Police Authority was told of the success of the scheme, in which just one person, out of 230 re-offended.
In the weekly news -
  • THE manager of a block of retirement flats plans to hand out fines to school-run parents who use the block’s car park. Last week, the Weekly News reported Mrs Cole’s fears about the safety of her residents after she spotted parents, whose children go to nearby Ursuline Convent school, in Queens Road, mounting the kerb and driving along the pavement, passing close by the pensioners’ flats. Labour councillor Mike Le-Surf has been campaigning on Mrs Cole’s behalf and met with Ursuline headteacher Vicky Squirrell last week. He said the meeting went well and Miss Squirrell had agreed to help crackdown on the dangerous driving. The issue will be discussed at the next council highways committee meeting.

CHRIS EVANS holds regular contests against his co-presenter Jonny Saunders, and having previously tried out a number of sports including darts, tennis and snooker, this week’s battle saw them turn to basketball. The duo – who both took to the court in Pirates kits - received expert coaching from former NBA player John Amaechi who taught them how to shoot, dribble and defend in a succession of drills. Pirates, who play their home games at the Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre, are currently enjoying their first season in the British Basketball League. They saw off Plymouth Raiders last Saturday in exciting fashion but are without a game this weekend and are not back in action until they travel to Milton Keynes Lions next Tuesday. - By Chris Phillips
