CAN EON BE SAVED???
Trade unions have made a last-ditch effort to stop a south Essex call centre closing with the loss of 600 jobs. Rayleigh MP Mark Francois said unions had put together a counter proposal to Eon over its closure of the call centre in London Road, Rayleigh. The Energy company’s bosses announced in January the call centre would be closing as it was creating centres of excellence elsewhere in the country. Mr Francois said he hoped Eon would reconsider its decision. The trade unions proposals are believed to detail ways of making savings, but keeping the site open. Staff are now in a consultation period with management until mid-April, with the closure of the call centre expected in June. - Evening Echo

TEEN PREGNANCIES DOWN ABORTION RATES UP
Data released by the Office of National Statistics show work being done to curb conceptions among 15 to 17 years old girls is working, even though more who do fall pregnant are choosing to terminate their pregnancy. The figures flag up how many youngsters got pregnant in 2008, compared to 2006. The information released shows that Basildon is still the worst in south Essex for teenage pregnancies with a teen pregnancy rate of 41.6 per cent. This is a decrease from 47.1 two years earlier. The national average rate is 41.1 However last year in Basildon 53 per cent of girls who did conceive opted for abortions, compared to 46 per cent in 2006. The highest abortion rate is in Brentwood where, although only 14.9 girls per 1,000 got pregnant, a massive 77 per cent of these had terminations. Overall the figures have been welcomed by health chiefs, who have invested time and money into trying to prevent teenage pregnancies and since 1998, there has been a 15.6 per cent reduction in Essex as a whole. - Evening Echo
